Topographic Survey
A survey mapping elevations, contours, trees and site features, the base map engineers need before designing anything. Typical US fees run $500 to $6,500, and most projects take 1 to 3 weeks.

What the work involves
A topographic survey maps the shape and elevation of the ground plus features such as buildings, trees, utilities and water. It is performed by a licensed land surveyor, not a civil engineer, though many civil engineering firms have surveyors on staff. Engineers design grading, drainage, retaining walls and septic systems from this data.
When you need it
- Before a grading, drainage or site plan
- Designing a retaining wall or driveway
- Septic or new home design
- Flood or drainage analysis
What you receive
- Topographic map with contours
- Spot elevations
- Feature and utility locations
- CAD file for the engineer
What drives the cost
Sources disagree: Fixr lists $500 to $1,200 for residential topographic surveys; other cost guides report $2,000 to $6,500 for larger or wooded sites.
Frequently asked questions
How much does topographic Survey cost?
Across the US, topographic Survey usually costs $500 to $6,500. Sources disagree: Fixr lists $500 to $1,200 for residential topographic surveys; other cost guides report $2,000 to $6,500 for larger or wooded sites.
How long does topographic Survey take?
Plan on 1 to 3 weeks from signed proposal to stamped deliverables, longer if a site visit, soil testing or a permit review cycle is involved.
Is a permit required for topographic Survey?
Often not on its own, but the findings frequently lead to work that does need a permit. We tell you which parts of the follow-up work your local building department will review, and can prepare those drawings too.
Will I also need a land surveyor?
Sometimes. Depending on the site, topographic Survey can also involve a land surveyor. We tell you up front which other professionals your project needs and coordinate with them so the drawings agree.
Who do you provide topographic Survey for?
Most of our clients for this service are homeowners, developers, contractors and architects. Describe your project and one of our engineers will reply with scope, fee and schedule.
Is a topographic survey done by an engineer?
It is performed by a licensed land surveyor. Engineers use it, and some firms offer both services.
Is it the same as a boundary survey?
No. A boundary survey establishes property lines. Many projects need both, often combined in one survey.
Can drone data replace a topo survey?
Drone mapping can supplement surveys, but permit plans usually need a survey sealed by a licensed surveyor. Drone data also struggles to capture ground elevations under dense vegetation.
What drives the cost?
Site size, vegetation, terrain and how many features must be located. Adding underground utility locations or tree surveys increases the price.
