Commercial Building Structural Design
Structural engineering for commercial, retail, industrial, multifamily and institutional buildings under the IBC.
What the work involves
A structural engineer of record designs the gravity and lateral systems, foundations and connections for buildings governed by the International Building Code. Systems range from wood and cold-formed steel to structural steel, concrete, masonry and pre-engineered metal buildings. The engineer coordinates with the architect and MEP engineers, prepares drawings and specifications, reviews shop drawings, and specifies required special inspections.

Frequently asked questions
How much does commercial Building Structural Design cost?
Across the US, commercial Building Structural Design usually costs $5,000 to $150,000. HomeAdvisor lists commercial engineering plans at $5,000 to $100,000; larger buildings are often priced as a percentage of construction cost and can exceed that.

Plan on 1 to 6 months from signed proposal to stamped deliverables, longer if a site visit, soil testing or a permit review cycle is involved.
Do I need a licensed PE for commercial Building Structural Design?
In most US jurisdictions, yes. When the work needs a permit, the plans, calculations or report usually must be sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state where the project is located. Every deliverable we issue for permit is sealed that way.
How do I verify an engineer's license in New York?
Engineers practicing in New York are licensed by the New York State Board for Engineering, Land Surveying and Geology (NYSED Office of the Professions). You can confirm a license number and its status in the board's public license search before you sign a contract.
